Rayburn – Mike

We moved to North Wales in 2002 - to an empty quarryman's cottage. I don't remember we had considered a Rayburn before buying the house. The only things in the kitchen were a sink and an ancient solid fuel range made by Doric. As it was already plumbed in for heating and hot water the simplest option was to replace it with a newer version. That was when we started looking at Agas and Rayburns and fell in love with them. The choice of fuel was likewise dictated by the existing arrangement. There was (is) no room for an oil tank or gas bottles and no mains gas available. Solid fuel it was then, and I have to say I love it. Yes it can be a bit of a pain sometimes when it's raining and I have to go outside to fill the coal hod, and sometimes I don't bother or forget and it goes out, but mostly it is a joy. I can always tell as soon as I open the front door if it has gone out - the atmosphere in the house is different. One aspect I like is being 'off the grid' - if all else fails I can go up to the woods and collect some fuel and be independent. Indeed, when we have had powercuts in the village those of us with Agas or Rayburns have ended up cooking for everyone else! It gets neglected at times, just sitting there quietly doing it's thing, but it never complains. My 9 year old daughter has just discovered the fun of baking so an endless stream of cakes and biscuits are filling the kitchen...
