Whats this? – Martin

Just before our marriage in 1971 Sue and I bought a large terraced house in Bradford which had been sub-let as bedsits for quite a few years, in fact for the first 18 months or so we still had a lodger up in the attic. He even occasionally paid us some rent! In the rather grotty kitchen was a strange object, obviously unused for years which said 'Aga' on the front. On inspection it was(fairly) obvious that it was some sort of stove, we decided to find out more, contacted our local dealer who at that time was Rycrofts the local plumbers merchants (now long gone). They set it up for us, we bought 15 cwt of sunbrite doubles and we were on a learning curve still continuing 38 years on. A few things have changed, we converted to gas after a few years, those who have not had a solid fuel stove would not beleive the mess involved. And (purists will be horrified) we painted the cream Aga blue. Our Engineer said we couldn,t do it. Not a thing to say to my wife; I came home from work a couple of days later and we had a blue Aga. From a mixture of trial and error, Aga demonstrations and judicious reading we gradually got the hang of using the Aga and now find any other stove a real pain to use, you have to remember to turn them on for a start, so complicated. In fact this caused problems for our children in cookery lessons at school as they had simply no concept of having to turn a cooker on or off and to this day the first few days of any self-catering holiday are spent complaining about the cooker, unless of course it is an Aga. A very interesting part of the story came a few years ago when a gentleman called collecting for charity. It turned out he used to live in the house and had the Aga installed in 1953. He asked if we still had the Aga and excitedly called his wife who was also collecting when told we had. We had an interesting chat and they left very happy. We now only have one daughter left at home and must soon look to moving to a smaller house, whether that will involve an Aga or not I don't know as I will probably be retired then and capital and running costs will have to be considered. I would like to think it would as in my opinion there is simply no other form of cooking which compares, We will see.
