Rhodesia – Cliff Potter

AGA 300 year anniversary : My Story in 1949 I immigrated to the then Southern Rhodesia and found a job with a local family company installing AGA "C" Class anthracite cookers at a cost of £145 each with a written guarantee for 10 years. In August 1954 I was invited to a "hands on" course in London (Orchard Place?) followed by a visit to Smethwick Birmingham coundry. During the period 1950-1958 I installed approx 125 "C" class cookers covering all Southern Rhodesia, almost all in the3 farming areas on dreadful roads. I remember when an occasion installing the AGA at the home of the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia, Sir Godfrey Huggins who avidly watched the installaltion and offered me a beer - where else could this happen? Sadly I had to leave the company in 1956 as it was closing down, I lost all contact with AGA until I left Zimbabwe in 2005. I was unaware that Anthracite came from Newcastle, Transvaal, South Africa. In 1980 the Zimbabwe Government stopped this supply citing foreign exchange shortages. I often wonder how many AGA's are lying cold and unused in so many kitchens.
