I shall never be without again! – Elm House Cook

I was first "hooked" on Agas in the late seventies when we took the plunge and had one installed in the small terraced cottage where we lived at the time. It was a white, gas fired, two oven Aga with a “back boiler”. It kept the whole house lovely and warm and provided us with all the hot water we needed. And not forgetting the wonderful cooking – in those days I made all my own bread and did lots of baking, plus the ease of making “everyday” meals was incredible. And no cooking smells either! Another bonus in a small house. Sadly, I had to leave that house in the early nineties (though I know the Aga is still there, going strong!) Two houses later, and I was still suffering incredible withdrawal symptoms. Even the top-of-the-range Parkinson-Cowan with double ovens and electronic timer for starting up the oven while I was at work, ready for the evening meal, failed to satisfy my cravings for the old days! There was nothing for it – the kitchen would have to have a re-fit. Foreign holidays were sacrificed and we went on a fact-finding trip to the same supplier (T N Cooks in Skipton) where the original white Aga had originated. We swallowed hard when we realised how much the prices had risen in those 25+ years, but I just knew it would be worth it. This time we went for the “classic cream” model, and the large kitchen we now had in a modern house, was refurbished to give more of a Mediterranean-cum-farmhouse appearance. I finally felt complete – an Aga was my trusty companion and work-horse once more and though the modern breadmaker has taken over some of my baking, I still get so much pleasure from the remainder of the baking and meal preparations, plus as the family and extended families have increased in size, the large scale entertaining and catering is just a doddle! If we ever move again, the house will HAVE to have an Aga, or we shall have to be able to afford to install one! Long live the Aga!
