AGA Stories

Best wedding present – Hazel

When we married in 1980, my parents bought us a 12 year old second hand solid fuel Aga. It lay in bits in a barn, my Father said this was the best way to check the condition of the barrel and water jacket etc. Nearly 29 years on it is still going strong having had a fire in its belly for almost all of this time. Some parts have been replaced, the chimney has been the most vulnerable bit having the very top outside replaced several times. 3 generations of our family have cooked on Agas and I would hate to be without it. We have a cosy warm house with loads of hot water heated by it.The modern generation Aga appears not to do this now, so we are sticking with it despite the extra work of solid fuel. I love the fact that the work surfaces are free of electric kettles, toasters, slow cookers yoghurt and bread makers, the windows free of condensation,we have lovely warm plates and serving dishes, the cooking smells go up the flue and the ovens self cleaning. Who needs reminding of the last roast........ tea gets made and dinner gets served even in a power cut. If you are canny one can cut a few corners with the laundry too.
