PENNY HASSETT AGA – Paula and Brian

My friend Maggie rang to say there was an Advert in a local paper, an old farmhouse was being demolished, original Aga for sale for £50.00, solid fuel, buyer dismantles within 2 weeks, think it had been there since the early 1950s. Malcolm (her husband) and Brian togged up, masks etc. because they found fine powder inside the top, thought it asbestos, spent a couple of days dismantling coming home and washing clothes to decontaminate and showering (subsequently found it to be Fullers Earth!) took old Rayburn out, re-erected and spent about £1.000.00 on spare parts and now lovingly adored ever since,She has an extra wide top think it is one of the originals, keeps us snug, cooks beautifully, always ready, dont even turn off in summer, just open the doorsand windows if too hot. Roasting is unbeatable in an Aga, I prove and cook my bread, dry my flowers, washing, all christmas cakes and puddings are cooked overnight safely, stocks, soups, casseroles too. Socks and teatowels, pillowcases and towels all dried and self ironed by my precious Aga. Sit by her in the winter, she is the heart of the house, keep cosy watching the tv too. She is a luxury I would not give up. If we ever move I'm not leaving without her!
