The Saga of our AGA – Mary Beth

We lived in the UK for two years from 1999-2001 where we saw our first AGA. We had been back in the US five years when a squirrel chewed through a ground wire and fried itself and our ovens. So we went shopping for a new oven never thinking we had an option to buy an AGA. In our shopping research we discovered that we could buy an AGA and have it installed in our California home. We were told it would take 10 weeks. We could live with that. 10 weeks turned into 20 and finally we were notified at the 30-week mark that our AGA was in the US. So we scheduled an installation date. A week before our installation date, the installer quit. So we had to wait 12 more weeks for the AGA to be installed. The day of installation arrived. While unpacking the crates, the installer's assistant dropped a piece of the AGA on his foot and broke it (his foot). They also discovered that the bottom piece of the AGA was cracked. So a replacement part was ordered. Further delays pushed the installation to December 2007. We had been cooking on a fifth element electric burner, outdoor grill and microwave for six months. I was thrilled to finally have a cooker and anticipated the upcoming holidays with enthusiasm as I was learning how to adapt to my new cooker. A week before Christmas I was baking and discovered that my ovens were not hot enough so I called our service person and explained what was happening. He told me to turn off the oven Christmas night and he would return to see what the problem was the day after Christmas. The service man who was also our installer reported that our thermostat and fan were not working and would have to be replaced. So we cooked for another six weeks using our makeshift burner, grill and microwave. I am not exaggerating! Finally in February, which is now 16 months since we placed the order for the AGA, the service man returns with the replacement parts and installs them. We fired up the AGA again and it has worked beautifully ever since. Although the wait was painful and very frustrating, it was worth it. Nothing cooks like my AGA and I have enjoyed discovering all the things I can do with it. My favorite part is that it is always ready when I am and with little adaptation I can produce much loved family recipes successfully every time. I know many who questioned our patience and choice but I am thrilled with my AGA!
