The one we got right – Jilloh

Moving into an old house in need of complete renovation with a young child and another on the way is perhaps not the most original story. New chicks new bricks the saying goes. Like many others before us, the scale of the job only really became apparant once we'd waved the removal men goodbye. One thing I was sure of was that I wanted an aga. There was a bricked up fireplace in the kitchen just waiting to be revealed and then filled with a lovely new oven. However, our carefully laid plans were about to be shattered and the months following the move are now a blur. People talk about houses being a 'disaster' but having a partner fall ill while pregnant and looking after a four year old is incomparable to anything else we had experienced. Somehow, in the midst of chaos and using what I suppose in hindsight was some form of automatic pilot I chose a kitchen and an aga to complement it. We couldn't enjoy the aga at first, especially my partner, who after leaving hospital was too ill to return to such a chaotic and dust filled house. But, the dust, as it tends to do, did eventually settle. I rememeber it was six months or so after the aga was fitted that I looked at it properly. The house, although far from perfect was taking shape and whilst there was the odd thing to do as well as a few things that we'd done which, with the benefit of hindsight had not been the best decision, one thing was clear. The aga was fantastic.
