Feeding the five thousand – anitalark

My Aga is the heartbeat of my home. Its my second aga, the first one had a problem with the oven overheating and had to be dismantled. I could not bear to say "Goodbye" so she sat in the garage for a few days until my daughter came and saved her. She had her reconditioned and took her to her London home. I, in the mean time had rung aga dealers in the surrounding area and found someone who was able to install a new one for me the following day, colour was unimportant, just needed something in stock, thus my new friend arrived in blue!!! I have three children who over the years have always brought all their friends home, I run a residential care home for the elderly in my house, I give lots of parties, including my daughters wedding where we had more than 300 guests here. My aga copes with it all without complaint. My black top is marked and sticky, my ovens an interesting shade of brown, my shiny lids have some dents and scratches, to me my aga is still beautiful. When she is off for her annual service the light and love seems to leave my kitchen, the traditional Fish and Chip lunch from the shop is eaten with a sense of sadness for the unwelcoming space it has to be consumed in. Hot days in the summer my aga dries the sweat from my body, cold ones in the winter it warms my cold toes, back aches disappear if one sits on the floor with ones back against the bottom oven door. Aged pets fight for their place on the mat in front. The downside of an aga??? Keep an eye on your tea towels!! Its easy to fold them back on top of the lid and think they are freshly laundered when they are in fact well ironed dirty rags!!! PS. My daughters much loved cream aga has just returned to Chesham with her, its proudly sitting in her new home a few yards from where its life began 16 years ago!!
