Ossi the pheasant – Foster mum

On May day, whilst visiting a church about 20 miles from our home we came across a lady who was distraught because whilst visiting her mother's grave she had found an 3 pheasant eggs on the grave. It appeared that the grass had been recently strimmed and the nest had been destroyed. The undamaged eggs had been placed on the grave. One of the eggs had hatched but the baby pheasant was cold and near to death. We could hear cheeping noises from within the other two eggs but they were cold to the touch. The lady was concerned and did not know what to do with the eggs. We took them from her and when we reached home we placed them in a box in the lower oven. The temperature was on the lowest setting. They hatched the nest day and in the box -they spent the nights in the lower oven for a fortnight, gaining strength and weight. They then transferred into a box in the living room and finally into a run outside. We purchased special pheasant chick food and they were very noisy and demanding for several weeks. We released them later in the year and we hope they survived.
