AGA Stories

Long term love affair – Mo

1966 was my first experiene of an Aga. I fell in love with the wonderful cosy atmosphere created, my hostess had saved her coal fired Aga from being destroyed because it was too old! 2008 and her beloved Aga is still going strong! I wasn't able to get my own wonderful Aga until 1993, it was bought second hand and in pieces. We had to rebuild it, replace the insulation and wick and of course clean it. The previous owners had been cruel to this lovely cooker and several tins of caustic cleaner were required to get through the thick layer of grim and gunge. I of course had to change my way of cooking. We also had the problem of prevailing winds causing downdrafts which required three feet of brickwork to be added to the chimney pot and the perverbial 'H' addition at the top. My family have largely left home but I still love my Aga and the warm cosy kitchen which my husband and I use more than any other part of the house. The Aga has become an integral part of the home, sometimes it is very naughty, generally around Christmas or some other very busy period, it tends to let you know if your attention is taken up elsewhere, by giving off diesel fumes and if you don't take notice then it belches out black smoke! Just like any pet it doesn't like being ignored. Aga's need thought and attention that is not generally given to cookers, but they repay you tenfold with their convenience and instant heat. Mine only heats the water, but some wonderful New Aga's can heat the whole house. If I were lucky enough to win the lottery I would buy one of these new 'creatures'. The Aga is one of the best cookers, if in doubt, try it out.
