My Grandmother had an Aga. I came to England from Scotland and inherited an original cream Aga , coal fired ,with the house we bought.I had a baby of 3 months and a five year old and proceeded to emulsion the kitchen , however having no central heating and only coal fires and the coal Aga , the bunkers did not accommodate all the coal, so some had to be left outside . I spent the day painting , having taken the scuttle filled with coal into the back porch.Oh! I forgot to say that we were experiencing a very snowy winter and the coal for the Aga , I had collected was covered in snow and YES ! It melted and I stoked the Aga for the night but the snow had melted and the water shot into the boiling hot unit and the whole kitchen was covered in hanging black droplets of soot. However I loved this cooker and eventually we had it converted to gas and very successfully. Many years later I moved house ---- and NO AGA!We saved up and choose our emerald Aga , now 13 years old, run on gas and my two schnauzers best friend .We love our Aga for the feeling of friendship, warmth, hospitality and the best form of cooking .I am now a Grandmother and this is where my story started.
